Events: 2002 FRPI Speaker SeriesChildren, Families, and Welfare Reform: New Challenges, New Research
In the early 1990s, presidential candidate Bill Clinton promised to "end welfare as we know it." Passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunities Act in 1996 came close to accomplishing this promise, and its enactment has precipitated an enormous amount of inquiry into the effects of the many changes entailed in this new law on the well-being of low-income children and their families. The findings from these studies are just becoming available as the U.S. Congress re-examines the 1996 welfare reform provisions. What have we learned about the impact of this dramatic policy transformation on the lives of children and their parents?
Children, Families, and Welfare Reform, the 2002 lecture series, sponsored by the University of Nebraska's Family Research and Policy Initiative in cooperation with the Center on Children, Families, and the Law and the Departments of Sociology, Psychology, and Communications Studies, presents four distinguished researchers who will address a variety of critical research and policy questions regarding the relationship between welfare reform and child and family development and well-being.
